Introduction / Status quo
For a world-class city with over eight million people, New York has a shocking lack of public toilets. If you plan to walk around for a few hours, you might want some helpful strategies before you set off:
Most restaurants and bars allow customers only to use their facilities. If you ask politely, some restaurants might allow you to use their bathroom, but do not automatically expect you will be warmly greeted and welcomed. Obviously if you have a health problem, you might want to plead your case as it will probably be persuasive!
Starbucks, McDonalds and other fast-food restaurants in Manhattan generally have clean bathrooms that are easy to find and not problematic to use. Museums, public libraries and some parks have toilets, but nearly all subway stations do not.
An eight million city without any public restrooms (or with only a few of them) surely gets an image problem in the eyes of the millions of tourists. Europeans are used of this public service, mostly financed by the cities themselves.
The solution: self-cleaning bathrooms
The perfect solution for this shocking lack are self cleaning bathrooms, such as:
Coin-Opperated public toilets have been installed on the streets in European cities for years. These small restrooms automatically clean themselves between uses and provide a private single-person stall for those who need to relieve themselves on the run. They're really a great thing to have when on the run in the city and looking for a place to go. They are now showing up in American cities. Many have advertisements to help provide funds.
Realization
The simple idea for realizing this urgent need for the City of New York as well as its citizens, shoppers and tourists is the following:
City of New York
- Uncomplicated permission for at least 100 bathrooms (places to be determined)
- Mounting of the cabinets and mounting fees for water and power as well as the future energy costs
- Contract guarantee for at least 20 years between the City of New York and the project holder with the exclusive right for the project holder to enlarge the amount of toilet cabinets if necessary
Project holder
- Financing and make the cabinets available for the City of New York
- The entering fee into the cabinet is 1 $; the total income will be reinvested into the maintenance and cleaning of the objects
- Every cabinet has at least one advertising space in the format of a citylight poster (119 x 170 cm). This advertising space belongs to the project holder and may be sold by him for the period of the guaranteed contract.
Investor
- Corresponding cabinets in Switzerland cost about CHF 70’000.00 per piece, including the frames for placing the posters. For at least 100 pieces a financial amount of approx. CHF 7’000’000.00 (= approx. $ 7’000’000) is needed.
- The contract may include a further engagement if the need of more cabinets is given and will be realized in the future with the City of New York.
